The Idea and the reality

The purpose for this Community Performance was to examine the power and the allure of confinement in our everyday lives. When people look at stanchions, they usually think about security or boredom; but some can see them as paths to greater things. I wanted to demonstrate the idea of the clash of freedom and confinement.

To represent the freedom, I chose the location to be the large wide open field in front of Anderson Hall. Some use this field as a shortcut, while most others choose to walk on the sidewalk and avoid this field. For the confinement part of the idea, McCain Auditorium allowed me to borrow 15 stanchions for about two hours. I set up these stanchions up in the form of a small maze out in the field. This addition of confinement to the freedom of the field illustrates my idea pretty well. My classmates assisted me by standing in the maze in the form of a line for waiting.
The overall effect was amazing, and I think that it turned out perfectly. It was also interesting to view the interactions of my classmates with the performance. It took quite a while to get all of the great footage, and my classmates were very patient.

At first my classmates were very still and serious while standing in line, however as time passed, they became more relaxed and they ended up having several conversations with each other. Their postures seemed to relax and they seemed to become more comfortable with the setting.
