Classmate photo

mini-project

This assignment taught us how to use Adobe Bridge and we had to utilize a photo that we had to take ourselves, rather than use one from an online source. The photo had its levels adjusted and was slightly cropped.

Artist statement

For my first image, my idea stemmed from the connection of Apple's past and present. In the past, Apple was all about creativity, and their logo reflected that creativity; the apple filled with the colors of the rainbow. Presently, the company has become the height of popularity while the idea of creativity and innovation has been left behind. their new logo to this day still shows the apple, however all color has disappeared and it seems mass produced.
For my second image, I wanted to show a similar change that has occurred with Microsoft Windows. Microsoft has always been heavy on the corporate side of things, but their logos have always incorporated the four colors red, green, blue, and yellow. . . until their most recent Windows 8 logo which is entirely blue and white. Windows has usually been shown being blown by the air, as if it were a flag, however the newest logo seems blank . Windows almost used to offer an escape from reality, however their newest logo (and OS) seem skewed toward popular culture and the norm.

Project#3: Short Film

Artist Statement

For my short film, I decided to make it about my perseverance and desire to train myself in creating art. I am a senior at K-State, majoring in Digital art with an animation focus. In the three years that I have been here, I have only had two classes which actually involve digital art in some way. This has created a lot of cognitive dissonance for me and in order to combat this, I have been going down to the library for about 6 hours+ a week in order to learn more. I desire to learn about 3d sculpting and the animation of these 3d sculpted things.
The film starts off With a lot of fade outs and sad music as the camera slowly moves toward the media development center; my narration is laid over the top of it in order to explain the situation. This is to convey the cognitive dissonance that I feel when I think about the lack of digital courses that I have taken. The second part of the video continues the narration, explaining what I have been doing in my free time. The music changes to a very fast musical score, with a piano playing quickly in order to emphasize my sense of purpose. I show a timelapse of myself working with Maya autodesk. The art I am creating in Maya is a Skull. Honestly...the skull has no artistic symbols in this video because I was making it for halloween. The third part video incorporates an interview of myself explaining that the art program at K-State has actually taught me a lot and that I have used skills learned in those classes in order to become a better artist. The music in this section transitions from the speedy piano into a very upbeat music in order to convey that my dissonance is dissipating and that things are looking up. The interview continues and I explain that I have been inspired by the accomplished animator known as Monty Oum. I show another timelapse, but this time I am working on the Drawing tablet. The picture I am drawing is the character Lie Ren from the popular web series RWBY. I chose this character because it shows my struggle in following the path of learning by doing.

Project #4: Final

Artist Statement

For my final project, I used purely flash animation to convey an idea. I wanted to convey the idea of inspiration, where there are several thoughts, however some of them can grow and become beautiful. The scene starts off with singular drops splashing down upon a black surface; each one accumpanied by a tone. Soon drops start falling simultaneously, and the chords begin to change and create harmonies. The ideas, represented by drops, start to become overwhelming and fill the screen with ripples.
Finally one drop falls and the music changes. This one drop bounces and becomes 4 separate drops, each of a different color. These drops fly around and create their own ripples. It becomes a beautiful display of motion and color. The drops then reassemble back into the one drop and fly back up. This represents one idea standing out from the others and becoming stronger. One idea can become many things.
My idea for this project came from my desire to learn about animation. The more I made, the more ideas came forth and contributed to the overall completion. My classmates really seemed to like the progress critique, so I continued animating and added more. Using someone else's music for this didn't seem to fit, so I created my own music and tones in Garageband.
