STANCHIONS!

12/2/2013

The amazing McCain Auditorium has agreed to lend me at least 15 stanchions! Booyah! My dream number was actually 16 stanchions, however I can make it work. The actual Community Performance is tomorrow and I am a little bit scared. I really want it to go well and I can't wait to see how it looks. From what I can tell, the weather is actually supposed to be amazing, but we will have to see.

  • Beach Museum (4-8)

I have tried a few other sources and there are other locations I have yet to check out:
  • Waters Rental
  • Manhattan Airport
  • Manhattan Art Council
  • Movie Theater

Project Proposal

11/5/2013

For my project, I received a lot of great ideas from my classmates. They also brought up the point about it being late fall, leading me to change my idea. My original plan was to have people take off their shoes and to walk across the grass in order to appreciate Kansas (the lack of fire ants). Then I realized that it would be too cold for that. I did like the idea of using stanchions in some way to represent an idea.
The project would consist of a group of stanchions sitting in the field/walkway that is a popular shortcut on most days. There would be 2 groups of stanchions. One group would be a organized into a straight path and short cut. The other group would be organized into a small maze. There will be signs at the fronts of each of the paths. On the shortcut path, the sign will say "Easy Mode." The sign on the twisty path will say, "Hard mode." Utilizing the immersion of video games into lifestyles, I wish to convey that while the easy path is indeed quicker, the harder path may be much more satisfying. Throughout the hard mode path, there will be several QR codes which lead to different entertaining and innovative webpages/pictures. I am also playing with the idea of putting up these signs in other places like:
  • Easy mode: walk normally | Hard mode: hopscotch
  • Easy mode: google | Hard mode: Encyclopedia
  • Easy mode: 1st floors of parking garage | Hard mode: Roof
  • Easy mode: walk normally | Hard mode: stop and observe memorial

If I did use the multiple sign idea, I would put QR codes and links to a website which explains this project and has pictures.

BOOM! goes the Mic

10/1/2013

Today I was introduced to a new piece of equipment...the boom mic. I was given the task of controlling the mic, while Adam controlled the camera. Today's task was to harvest decorative gourds to prepare for the season. This was the first time that I've ever controlled a boom mic, and I'm not going to lie...it is actually quite tiring. Adam and I patrolled among our classmates, looking for good opportunities to film and document the experiences of the day. We were told to try to get the boom mic into the middle of groups in order to capture multiple voices more effectively.

yes we pump-can, gourd-geous and other             pun-kins

Today on the farm we went to the pumpkin patch. There we learned that the farm had multiple varieties of pumpkins and gourds. The two main pumpkin varieties that they sold were Jack o lantern pumpkins, and pie pumpkins. The farm also had several varieties of decorative gourds ready for the Autumn season. The pumpkins we picked today were relatively small Jack o Lanterns (maybe). What we did was have the truck drive along side us as we picked the big pumpkins from their plants. Once we got the pumpkins, we put them into the back of the truck into gigantic boxes. We did this for most of the day, but in the end we got some amazing time lapse shots of us picking pumpkins and moving along with the truck. One of my favorite things about the time-lapse footage is that you could watch as the clouds passed, formed and dissipated in the sky, all within the length of only a couple seconds.

Cats, chickens, pumpkins...oh my!

Today at the farm we actually just focused primarily on interviews and getting everyone's take on what we had done so far. There were chickens and two cats wandering around, while a large wooden structure sat next to the house with a Zip line extending out from the back of it. As it turns out, the owners of the farm host a pumpkin patch hay ride as well as several other activities for curious individuals during the Fall season. For my interview I gave my take on what I thought about what we were doing so far.
First day: Potatoes! Second day: watermelons and peppers. Today  . . . Pumpkins.
At the end of the interview, I got an idea to make a super-condensed interview afterwords in order to add a certain amount of humor to my slightly awkward interview.
In the end, the two cats stole the show and captured everyone's attention for probably a good thirty minutes. I can't wait to start going through the data and begin the editing process!

Broken hearts, great bells of fire,                               and Kale: The Juice-icator!

The second day out on the farm, we changed things up a bit and we were told to pick Jalapeño peppers. I learned a lot about the experience, including the correct size at which Jalapeños were supposed to be picked at. For all my life, I have considered Jalapeños to be the Russian-Roulette of peppers, in terms of heat I mean. Once I was told that the stretch marks on the peppers were supposed to mean more heat, but as it turns out that the stretch marks indicate that the peppers have just been on the plant for a longer period of time.

While were were being shown the peppers, we were also introduced to a new vegetable called kale. As it turns out, kale is used a lot in smoothies, juices and health drinks (and totally not a champion in the popular game called League of Legends). When it comes to taste, it tastes a bit like sour clover, but without the sour and more bitter.
Once we finished picking peppers for the day, we all hopped into the back of a (very [VERY]) hot van and drove over to a field of watermelons. Once we arrived we were introduced to a variety of watermelons; Some of them seedless, some of them not. Despite the presence of seeds or not, they were all very tasty. Surprisingly enough, the insides of the watermelons remain remarkably cool in the extreme heat of the sun.

Rock or potato?

9/5/2013

The first day at the farm was most certainly a learning experience. For starters, it taught me what I need to bring with me the next time we head out there; for example sunscreen and a water bottle.
Once we arrived at the farm, we were informed that we were going to be picking up potatoes, which had already been thrown up by a plow(sort of). Despite the heat of the day, the job itself wasn't really that difficult; Sometimes it was slightly difficult to differentiate between rocks and potatoes,
but other than that it was pretty straight forward.
I think my favorite part of the day was when we were shown the place where all the Jalapeño peppers were grown.
